IMPORTANT
DO NOT PROCRASTINATE
It is critical that you send a copy of your DD-214 (Discharge Papers) to your local County Veterans Service Agency. Do not send original, keep original in a safe place but known to all who may need it.
Having a copy of this document on file at the County Veterans Service Agency will expedite future claims, or benefits filings that you, your spouse or family may initiate. Such things as minimizing the time to determine Aid and Attendance benefits for war time veterans or spouses, or DIC (Dependent Indemnity Claim for compensation), military funeral honors, Presidential Memorial Certificates, or burial flags, to name a few.
Also, if you have a service connected disability, and have been granted a percentage rating by the VA, you may want to send a copy of the award letter by the VA to your County Veterans Service Agency.
Having such a document on file will again allow the veteran service officer a faster more proactive response to any need that you, your spouse or family may require going forward. Many issues we face are time sensitive, and taking the time now, will greatly reduce some stresses for all involved in the need documentation of your honorable service to our nation.
